In an ever changing social, political, and economic environment, our students must understand the events of the past that will affect their future actions and decisions. The study of history provides students with knowledge and skills to become productive citizens of a global community.

We study history to understand why some societies are successful and why some fail, to understand the actions of key historical figures, and to appreciate the spirit of cooperation that enables communities to prosper. Most importantly, we study history to promote citizenship in our students which will enable them to be informed leaders of tomorrow.

There are many paths a student can navigate in the study of history. Recent scholarship on the teaching of history suggests that the history classroom should be a place where students are engaged in activities that allow them to discover history through the use of primary sources. The history department maintains that the use of primary sources helps to make history come alive for students and that through the analysis of these documents students gain a greater appreciation of the story of our past.
