WEST MORRIS CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

PHILOSOPHY

The study of science is critical to the development of a scientifically and technologically literate individual. This development begins with questions about the natural world and one’s role in it.  The student should be actively involved in the process of scientific inquiry and problem solving, with the science lab as a central part of the students' learning experience at all levels.

The skills of observing, analyzing, evaluating, reading, writing, speaking, and listening are emphasized. West Morris Regional High School District initiatives, which includes theme and skills-based Freshman Learning Experience, Vertical Teaming within all scientific disciplines, and a focus on the development of higher order thinking skills, are the foundation on which the science curriculum is built. The science courses meet the New Jersey Core Content Standards and focus on major enduring understandings and essential questions that promote inquiry and divergent responses. This focus enhances student development into creative and reflective thinkers and independent learners.
