The world language curriculum supports the goal of the WMRHSD “to prepare students for life beyond high school.” The objective is to encourage students to interact with people of other cultures and to be productive and culturally sensitive members of a diverse community. Our instructional focus is communication (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational) within a cultural context. Our curriculum follows The National Standards in Foreign Language Education and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards, which define what students should know and be able to do in foreign language education.
At WMC and WMM, we recognize five goal areas: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. These aims encompass the goals and objectives of the World Languages Department.
Communication is central to second language study, whether the communication be face-to-face, in writing, or across centuries through the reading of literature.
Through the study of other languages, students gain knowledge and understanding of the cultures of that language. The culturally sensitive contexts enable authentic language acquisition.
Learning languages also provides connections to other disciplines and perspectives that may otherwise be unavailable to monolingual English speakers. |
