Department Philosophy

The English Department recognizes that the continued evolution of a civilization requires that its language and literature remain vibrant, flexible, and adaptable to the highest expression of which the human being is capable.  We believe that the study of English encompasses knowledge of the language and its development, an understanding of its scope as a means of communication, and an appreciation of its artistry as expressed in literature.  

The English Department emphasizes skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and observing at all ability levels.  Through coordinated instruction and frequent practice in written and oral communication, students learn to express themselves in a concise, informative, persuasive, and entertaining manner.  In addition, students develop a capacity for higher order, analytical thinking through close, formalist, reading of literature in all genres. 

The English Department incorporates such district initiatives as improved performance on standardized tests, enhanced interdisciplinary coordination, and increased enrollment in higher level study through its commitment to the Freshman Experience, Vertical Teaming, and the expanding Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs.
